Welcoming a dog into your life is a major decision.
“When you make a commitment to adopt a pet, you’re essentially making a commitment for the next 15 years of your life,” says Dr. Katie Malehorn, hospital director at Dr. Boyd’s Veterinary Resort in Rockville, Maryland.
While no breed is “easy” to care for—every dog is an individual, after all—some tend to be a little more “beginner-friendly” than others.
With their laid-back demeanors and no-fuss lifestyles, these five breeds are considered ideal for first-time pet parents.
Golden Retriever
Friendly, intelligent and loyal, the Golden Retriever is one of America’s favorite family dogs. The eager-to-please breed is also a great choice for those who don’t have much experience with dogs, says Malehorn.
Although relatively easy to train, Goldens are high-energy, playful dogs and require plenty of exercise. They’re best matched with active households.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavaliers are known for being easy-going companion dogs. Affectionate and attentive, these well-rounded pups are also fun loving and athletic.
“A lot of Spaniels can be really wonderful starter groups because they have a heart as big as the room and they are so eager to please,” says Malehorn.
New pup parents should be aware, however, that Cavaliers require regular brushing to maintain their silky coats.
Poodle
Although famous for their fussy haircuts, Poodles are extremely adaptable and smart dogs. All three varieties—standard, miniature and toy—are good choices for new dog parents.
“They’re intelligent, clean, easy to train, very social and wonderful dogs,” says Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer of the American Kennel Club.
Poodles are considered “hypoallergenic”, as their curly coats are non-shedding. Unless you keep the coat clipped short, however, you should plan to brush your Poodle daily to prevent matting.
Greyhound
Greyhounds may be known for their speed, but they’re happy to enjoy family life in the slow lane. Gentle and independent, they’re surprisingly low-key pets who appreciate lounging with their companions.
“They are the type of dog that prefers to stay curled up on the couch,” says Malehorn.
However, like all dogs, Greyhounds do require regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. These lightning-fast pups should have an opportunity to run in a safe and secure area.
Shih Tzu
Affectionate and outgoing, the Shih Tzu is often cited as an all-around Good Dog.
“They have wonderful dispositions,” says Klein. “They were bred to be companions, and that explains a lot about their temperaments.”
Low-maintenance, low-energy and extremely social, they’re ideal for a wide range of lifestyles and families. Unlike other small breeds, these tiny charmers are known to be good companions for children.
While generally easy-going roommates, Shih Tzus do require daily brushing and regular baths to maintain their signature coats.
