5 facts you should know about Labrador Retrievers

Labradors Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. According to the American Kennel Club they are ranked as the number dog breed in the United States. They are energetic, athletic, intelligent and gentle dogs that would make a wonderful addition to any family. Here are five interesting facts about this lovable breed of dog:



Origins

Historically this breed was designed to be a fisherman’s helper used to help fetch ropes, haul nets and retrieve fish. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland, off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada.



Great Companions

Labrador Retrievers are sweet natured, intelligent and athletic. This makes them an obedient, active and loyal family dog. This breed of dog also makes for an excellent dog for participating in animal-assisted therapy programs.



Natural Swimmers

Labrador Retrievers are capable of being powerful swimmers. Their haircoat is naturally weather-resistant. Labs have a soft undercoat that acts as insulation to protect them from moisture and extreme temperatures. The outer coat has more coarse fur to assist in further repelling wetness. These double coats will shed seasonally.



Breeding

The average litter size for Labrador Retrievers is 8 and they can be found in three colors, yellow, black and chocolate. Life expectancy is approximately 10-12 years of age.



Size

There is a difference is weight and height between male and female Labrador Retrievers. The females are most often between 55-70 lbs and can grow to a height of 21-23 inches. The males are most often between 65-80 lbs and can grow to a height of 24 inches.
