While the felines in our lives are indeed unique creatures, there are certain breeds that tend to display exceptional smarts. Looking for an especially clever cat? Here are six of the smartest cat breeds.
Abyssinian
One of the oldest domesticated cat breeds, Abyssinians are quick learners and extremely curious, says author and feline behavior consultant Sarah Hodgson.
These dynamic cats make especially fun housemates. “Engaged in any novel activity, Abyssinians can easily be taught the meaning of words and encouraged to do tricks and other playful behaviors,” says Hodgson.
Balinese
Balinese have both brains and beauty. Smart and curious, they need plenty of engagement and enrichment.
“Family-oriented, these cats are often vocal and mischievous if they are ignored or neglected,” says Hodgson. “Their impulses can be channeled into tricks and other clever behaviors, or they can develop attention-getting routines all their own.”
Bengal
Known for their lively spirits, Bengals are adventurous, intelligent cats.
“Generally speaking, Bengals are good at figuring things out, such as opening doors and cabinets,” says Marilyn Krieger, a certified cat behavior consultant and author of Naughty No More! “Often, cabinets and doors need to be baby-proofed in order to keep the Bengal from opening them.”
Bengals form strong bonds, adds Krieger, and are very adept at getting the full attention of their people.
Burmese
Smart, social and eager to learn, Burmese are sometimes referred to as “dog-like.” Compared to Abyssinians and Bengals, they’re more laid-back companions.
“They’re smart and can be trained, but typically do not have the same manic intensity,” says Kirsten Kranz, director of Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue. “They tend to bond very closely to their people.”
Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex is a very determined cat, says Hodgson. As they tend to be curious and inquisitive, they’ll do whatever it takes to command attention, or to explore unfamiliar objects and new places.
Quick-witted and social, the breed seeks out affection – especially warm laps. As hairless cats, they crave cozy spaces. “A lack of a thick undercoat inspires them to seek out body contact and follow the trajectory of the sun,” says Hodgson.
Scottish Fold
Famously cute, the Scottish Fold is just as sweet. “Easily entertained with toys and love, many say Scottish Folds are Buddha-like in their ability to get along with all family members, no matter the species or age,” says Hodgson.
While different cat breeds are known to possess certain personality traits, how they’re raised and socialized also plays a large role. “A cat's best qualities are brought out in homes willing to devote the time necessary to socialize, interact and engage their pet,’ says Hodgson.
