7 Natural Treatments for Dog Anxiety

On a perfect day, dogs are our happy-go-lucky, fun-loving companions who don’t have a care in the world. Sometimes, though, our four-legged friends can become anxious, often due to fear or separation.

Like us, it’s normal, and even healthy, for dogs to have anxiety. Dog anxiety, however, can play out in many ways that don’t seem normal or healthy: destructive behavior, persistent howling, inappropriate elimination and aggression. These behaviors signal unchecked or poorly-managed anxiety—a problem for you and your dog.

Medication can help manage anxiety in dogs. But what if you prefer natural remedies? Fortunately, there are many natural treatments for dog anxiety.

Training

Several training methods can help dogs with anxiety. Counterconditioning is especially helpful for dogs with separation anxiety. With counterconditioning, a dog learns to replace an anxious reaction with a positive one. For example, if a dog with separation anxiety cries incessantly every time they’re alone, the pet parent can offer a food puzzle toy right before leaving the house. Over time, the dog associates being alone with fun, rather than anxiety.

Desensitization, another type of training, involves gradually exposing a dog to an anxiety-provoking situation. Exposure is coupled with reward when the dog behaves well.

It’s important to note that these training methods can be complex. A professional dog trainer or a veterinary behaviorist can help you train your dog with these methods.

Physical Activity

You know that tired, happy feeling you get after a fun bout of exercise? Dogs feel that, too! Playing fetch or running along the beach help relieve a dog’s anxiety. In addition to tiring out your dog, physical activity also provides mental stimulation, which wards off anxiety. Talk with your veterinarian to determine which physical activities are best suited for your dog.

Acupuncture and Massage

Acupuncture and massage aren’t just for people. They provide many benefits for dogs, including relaxation and anxiety relief. Look for a trained veterinary acupuncturist in your area. Your regular veterinarian can teach you at-home massage techniques for your dog.

Pheromones

Animal and human bodies produce pheromones, which help dictate social behavior. Pheromone collars and diffusers help dogs feel less anxious. These products are good for dogs who may not be able to take anti-anxiety medication or supplements because of gastrointestinal issues.

Herbs

Many herbs, including chamomile, valerian and lemon balm, work wonders for relieving anxiety in dogs. They can be combined to provide even more anxiety-relieving effects. Consult with a holistic veterinarian to determine which herbs to use and in what amounts for your dog.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies for dog anxiety include aconite, Pulsatilla nigicans and gelsemium. A holistic veterinarian can help you decide which homeopathic options will work best to relieve your dog’s anxiety.

CBD Oil

CBD (cannabidiol) is a substance that is produced by the cannabis plant. It has many benefits in people, including anxiety reduction. Its popularity in human and veterinary health has grown exponentially in recent years.

Most evidence of CBD’s benefits in dogs is anecdotal, so whether CBD oil reduces anxiety in dogs remains to be proven scientifically. Be aware that, in most states, it is illegal for veterinarians to discuss the use of cannabis products like CBD with their clients. Thus, you may need to do your own research on CBD oil and decide for yourself whether it is right for your dog.

Many natural treatments relieve dog anxiety. These treatments may take some time to work, so be patient and continue giving your dog lots of love. Be aware that severe cases of dog anxiety may require at least some medical treatment. If your dog has anxiety, talk with your veterinarian to come up with the ideal plan to help your dog feel more at ease.
