Dog Attacked and Drowned by Swan Protecting Its Young

Most pet parents know that dogs are at risk of drowning in lakes and ponds. But fewer consider the dangers posed by swans.

Recently, a dog was attacked and drowned by a swan in a Dublin park, reports the Irish Times.

The Cocker Spaniel was swimming in a pond near a group of swans and their young. An adult swan suddenly broke away from the others, approached the dog and pushed it underwater, “with one wing and then the other,” according to the Irish Times.

Onlookers were stunned, and a park ranger reported that the incident was the first of its kind.

While the deadly attack was unusual, swans are a known threat, especially during mating season.

“Most animals are extremely protective of their young, and swans are no exception,” says Dr. Lauren Jones, a veterinarian in the Philadelphia area. “Male swans have been known to attack unsuspecting passersby, as well as other animals.”

It is best to observe swans from a distance, and dogs should always be leashed if swans are present.

“As with all wild animals, never approach a swan’s nest or young, as the swan may perceive this as a threat and attack,” says Jones.

If your dog enjoys swimming, keep the following water safety tips in mind:

  • Consider a life jacket. There’s a common misconception that dogs are naturally strong swimmers. In reality, dogs can easily drown in lakes, pools, oceans and other bodies of water. Until you know your dog is a competent swimmer, he should wear a properly fitted life jacket.

  • Know your pet’s risk factors. Older dogs and dogs with certain medical conditions are more susceptible to drowning. Regardless of age, hairless dogs, toy breeds, lanky breeds and dogs with short legs and snouts aren’t known for their swimming abilities.

  • Beware of bacteria. In addition to drowning, water presents other dangers. Lakes, rivers and untreated pools can contain harmful bacteria and other organisms, such as blue-green algae, E.coli, salmonella and parasites.
