Although cats have a reputation for being aloof, many love spending quality, up-close time with their people. Searching for a cuddly companion? These five breeds are known for being especially affectionate:
Scottish Fold
Famously cute, Scottish Folds are as friendly as they are adorable. The breed is renowned for being gentle, quiet and loving.
“They are always around to make you smile,” says Cheryl Hogan, a specialty judge with The International Cat Association (TICA). “They are very loving and want to be with their special person every minute that they can.”
Scottish Folds like to follow their families around, and are known to be patient and tolerant with young children.
It’s important to note that not all Scottish Folds have the signature downturned ears. Some kittens never develop the namesake ear shape, but they remain just as sweet and affectionate as their folded ear peers.
Burmese
If you adopt a Burmese, you’ll have a constant companion. The playful, people-oriented cat is known for being a great family pet with a soft spot for just about everyone.
“No one will be alone if there is a Burmese in the house,” says Hogan. “They are very social and thrive on their family’s attention.”
Siamese
When it comes to affectionate cats, the Siamese is at the top of almost everyone’s list. This chatty kitty is almost always ready to play or snuggle with his favorite person. Smart and curious, Siamese make exceptional companions.
“The love you can see in their eyes toward their human is incomparable in my opinion,” says Hogan.
Japanese Bobtail
If you’re searching for a laid back cat, the Japanese Bobtail may not be for you. But if you’re ready to have some serious fun with your feline, this stump-tailed kitty is a wonderful choice.
“They love people,” says Teresa Keiger, a Cat Fanciers’ Association judge and Cat Talk Magazine editor. “They want to do things with you and they want to help you a lot. Anytime you’re working, a Japanese Bobtail will be right there to supervise.”
A true family cat, Japanese Bobtails are known for being good with children and other pets, including dogs.
Birman
With striking blue eyes and a lush, silky coat, the Birman is a certified beauty. But this sweet cat doesn’t let his good looks go to his head—he’s always ready to attend to his person.
“I have never met such a people-oriented cat in my life,” says Hogan. “If you’re in a good mood, there they are, ready to play. If you have a bad day, they are there to quietly comfort and console you.”
Patient, intuitive and laid back, the Birman enjoys the company of adults, children and other animals.
