How to Safely Clean Your Cat's Litter Box

Cats are fastidious about cleanliness and their litter box is no exception. It may not be the most pleasant of jobs, but keeping your cat's litter box clean is key to a happy cat that goes where it should. Scoop litter boxes at least once a day and add fresh litter as needed. Most experts recommend that the box be completely cleaned out once a week. Here's how:

  • Empty all dirty litter out of the box into a garbage bag, and deposit in your outdoor garbage.
  • Optional: Spray the box with a pet-friendly stain and odor remover and let it soak for a few minutes. Stubborn clumps will wipe away easily using paper towels.
  • While wearing rubber gloves, scrub out the box with a mild, unscented dish soap and warm water. Some people choose to wear a mask to keep litter dust at bay.
  • Thoroughly rinse out the litter box.
  • Dry the box completely before you add the litter back in or it will stick to the sides.
  • Add fresh litter to the box.
  • Replace litter boxes once a year. Scratches and daily use break down the plastic, which allows bacteria and odor to become trapped.

If your cat seems content with the litter situation, we don't recommend you change. But if you notice your cat going to the bathroom outside of the litter box or if you welcome home a new cat, you may need to reconsider which litter will work best for your favorite felines.
