Justin Bieber's Controversial New Kittens Cost $35,000

Justin Bieber has already decided to expand his family.

Recently, the singer gifted his new wife, Hailey Baldwin, a pair of kittens. The price tag? A staggering $35,000, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sushi and Tuna—who, naturally, already have their own Instagram account—are Savannah cats. The exotic hybrid is created by breeding a wild African Serval with a Domestic Shorthair cat.

Savannah cats are known for their long, lean builds and stunning coat markings. Although some Savannahs reach up to 30 pounds, most are roughly the size of a typical housecat.

The first generation crossing of a Serval and Domestic Shorthair is considered the "F1” generation; subsequent generations are created by breeding F1 Savannah cats together. While all Savannahs have wild traits, F1 cats tend to retain more Serval instincts, says Dr. Lauren Jones, a veterinarian in the Philadelphia area.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Savannah cats can be challenging in a home environment.

“Savannah cats have ample energy and an intensely curious nature, which can lead to trouble if that energy is not channeled into other exercise-oriented outlets,” says Jones. “These are not cuddly lap cats, and they have a propensity for becoming destructive.”

Animal advocates have raised ethical concerns about breeding Savannah cats. Owning a Savannah is illegal in many cities—including New York City, where Bieber and Baldwin have reportedly been house hunting.

“In most locations, Savannah cats are considered to be wild hybrids,” says Jones. “As a result, the vaccinations given to housecats may not have any legal standing. If a Savannah cat bites a person, they may need to go under a rabies quarantine or be euthanized.”

Sushi and Tuna aren’t Bieber’s first controversial pets. In 2012, he gave away his pet hamster, Pac, to a fan seeking an autograph. In 2013, German officials seized Bieber’s pet capuchin monkey, Mally, when he failed to provide the necessary documentation.

Mally was rehomed in a German zoo after Bieber never returned to reclaim his pet.
