Can you put triple antibiotic ointment on a dog? My dog was spayed two days ago and I want to put it on her spay incision.

The problem with using a "human" antibiotic ointment is that it isn't formulated with the idea that it might be ingested, as dogs often do. If the incision is looking red or weepy, I would strongly recommend having her rechecked by the vet who did the surgery. The reason is that if there's an infection she needs oral antibiotics - a topical isn't enough - and the incision is at risk of dehissence, which means opening up.

My cat was spayed 4 days ago her vet it closed till Tuesday and I’m worried about her surgical incision it swollen up
Yes there does appear to be some swelling there. Likely a seroma, due to leaky blood vessels just underneath the skin. No worries, because at leas the external area is sealed shut. For now I would...

Does my cat need to be seen at the vet again? I think ahe may have an infected incision from her spay. In the photo, on the bigger and darker spot, I can see what looks like blood/tissue when she moves a lot. It’s like a dried blood scab that moves. And sometimes I think I may see discharge or liquid, but I’m not sure. Should I take her back into the vet to get seen and closed back up?She didn’t wear a cone for the first few days. She is currently wearing a cone now, and her spay was done 2/9/24.
Thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question about Coconut and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. In the picture, I don't see any signs of infection, which would include severe...

My dog had a flea problem. He was on oral medication for 2 months and used spray and fleas bombs. We are going to see a family who has a dog. Can I take my dog with me?
Thanks for visiting Petcoach. I would certainly make sure that your pet does not have active fleas before making any visits. You mentioned he "WAS" on a flea medication for 2 months, so I am not...

Ziggy, very small miniature pinscher, has been reverse sneezing off and on for 3 days. We just put down a large area rug, brand new, about 7 days ago. That's the only change. Where I live, there isn't any blooming flowers yet. I just feel so bad for him. Anything I can do? I did a steamy bathroom but it didn't help.
Poor Ziggy! Luckily, reverse sneezing does usually go away on its own, but it can be very uncomfortable as its happening. Keeping him calm when it happens can help clear the irritant with less...

My puppy was spayed five days ago. The incision is about a inch long. A tiny hole is visible with no blood. I believe a scab was there

My 8 month old female dog just finished her first heat 2 weeks ago. I just noticed yesterday these two bumps on her private areas. I have attached photos for reference. She eating and acting normal. I also was able to touch the spot with a warm rag and she did not act like it was hurting her.
Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Based on the photos you provided, the bumps appear to be papules / pustules that indicate a skin infection. This could be from her licking at the area when...

Hello, A few days ago I noticed matted fur in my dog under her ear and at later inspection it must have been a scab. Her and our other dog often play rough so I'm wondering if something has caught her and because of where it is it isn't healing due to her scratching. I've placed an ecollar on her now and have been cleaning it, it bleeds very slightly at first when doing this. Could you advise if there is anything else I need to do. No vet appts until Wednesday, am I OK to monitor until then?
Ouch! That does look pretty irritated, so if it doesn't scab over or continues to look weepy, it's a good idea to have your vet take that look on Wednesday as it may need some anitbiotics. What you're...

Hi, My dog was spayed 3 days ago. She licked the wound overnight on day 2. I have her wearing a collar 24/7 ever since. It looks a little swollen and bloody to me. Shes eating and toileting fine. Shes sore and grumpy, not moving about except when getting frustrated (a few minutes every 3 or 4 hours) that she cant lick the wound. How does the wound look? Shes a bichon. Thanks
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This incision looks infected to me. Licking is very bad for that incision especially when it's directly after surgery. The discharge coming from it looks like pus...

Hello, I am devastated. My beautiful tabby cat, "Honey" died on her own at 1 a.m. Sunday. She had lung cancer. She was bloated with fluid and could not breathe. She was on her side with eyes staring as if in shock. A short time later she was dead. "Lap of Love" was coming to put her to sleep Monday. I feel so bad. I loved her so much. I will never forgive myself. Do you think she suffered or did the coma protect her and prepare her for death? Thank you. Linda
I am so sorry about the loss of Honey, Linda. It is always devastating to lose a beloved pet. Without seeing her in person, I cannot say for certain, but if she was in a coma, then I would suspect...

His condition is improving and he’s starting to make better more solid stool but he refuses to drink water. I’m worried about this- I’m also wondering when I am able to stop giving him chicken and rice and give him his kibble again. He’s been on boiled chicken and rice since Tuesday
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry to hear that Iggy has had all these issues. It is best to start transitioning him back to his regular food now. I recommend just putting a handful of...
