Can dogs eat potato chips? My dog ate a handful of Hawaiian onion potato chips. He's only 30lbs. Should he see a vet?

A handful of potato chips should not cause an emergent problem as the actual amount of onion in the ingredients is very low. I would be concerned about vomiting and/or diarrhea from gastric upset. Monitor her condition and contact your vet if she begins to show any behavioral changes.

The toxic dose of onions in dogs has been determined to be 5 grams of onion per kilogram of body weight. Your dog weighs around 13.6 kg, so that would be 68 grams of onions. On average, a teaspoon of onion would be around 5 grams, so he'd have to have consumed around 14 teaspoons of onions alone to be toxic. I doubt very seriously there's that much onion in a handful of chips. Onion ingestion, if at toxic levels, causes anemia in dogs. Monitor for lethargy, shortness of breath. If you're especially concerned, take him to your vet for a baseline CBC, which will tell you his red blood cell count today, and another in 2 - 3 days for comparison.
