Well this is actually a little bit more complicated of a question than most owners realize. "Colds" in people is similar to upper respiratory infections in dogs, they are usually caused by viral infections that can get secondary bacterial infections. If your dogs symptoms consist of mostly a "hacking cough" then the # 1 cause of this is "kennel cough" which is a bacterial infection only. However other things can cause a similar cough. But let's assume this is just a "Kennel cough" caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica, this is typically treated with a tetracycline drug such as Doxycycline for 10 days time. Most pets will be completely asymptomatic by day 4-7, however they can be infectious for up to 10 days after resolution of clinical signs.
If your pet is still hacking and coughing after 7-10 days of antibiotics then typically this means there is another underlying disease process or the bacterial infection is not susceptible to the antibiotic used. Another antibiotic can be tried at this point or your vet may suggest getting samples of the lung fluids (via a transtracheal wash or BAL) in order to correctly identify the source of the infection in order to select the appropriate treatment for it.

My 12-year-old female Cocker has always been calm but now is deaf and recently had a bad UTI. She’s on antibiotics and thyroid medication and has dry eye, for which I put an ointment in her eyes. Hello, my name is Christine My two dogs ate a foam ball, like a quarter size of it actually. I called my vet and he said to give them some Hydro peroxide. I did and they threw up. My dog had an infected sebaceous cyst for months, and an abscess near it too. I took him to 4 veterinarians and each prescribed antibiotics. None of all helped my little buddy, and he didn't get better at all. I did labs for him few days ago for culture and sensitivity of pus and a doctor prescribed meropenem SQ 500mg every 12 hours. Higgins started making the awful crunch noise this past November. He’s only making it when he’s sleepy, sleeping, or waking up. My cat has had digestive issues since I adopted her 2 months ago. They have improved dramatically over time, but she still has semi-regular gas and seems to be in mild-moderate discomfort from day-to-day. I give her 1 Proviable Probiotic sprinkled on her dry food 1x/day (Fussie Cat Chicken and Turkey Meal dry food; approx 3/4 cup per day). I discovered my dog drinking out of a bucket of really gross dark green water outside. He was throwing up for a few days. I’ve since removed the bucket of water and he’s stopped throwing up. I am concerned however if he needs antibiotics or something in case there was a bacteria or parasite in the bucket of water.
