Hello, Found this on my dogs chest, sorry picture not that clear. What is this, please ?! Thank you
Hello and thank you for using PetCoach. It is a bit hard to see this lesion but from the photo, it looks like there is a dark center. If this is true, it usually indicates tissue necrosis. This could...

I have just adopted an 8year old cat whose nose looks red raw and scabby. The son of the lady who owned her said he thought the other cats had scratched her but to me it looks more like an allergy or SCC. I would like to send a picture if possible. Thank you
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Diablo is having this issue.I agree with you that it does not appear to be an injury. My suspicion is SCC and you will need to get her to a vet for...

Hello petcoach! Today I was petting my cat when I suddenly felt something scab like and build up near her neck and shoulder. She doesn’t play fight or anything so I’m worried this could be a type of skin infection. Thank you!
Ouch! That does look like an irritated spot that's trying to heal. I would first try to clean the area as gently as possible so you can get a better look at it, and also try to keep it clean and dry...

Hello, I am devastated. My beautiful tabby cat, "Honey" died on her own at 1 a.m. Sunday. She had lung cancer. She was bloated with fluid and could not breathe. She was on her side with eyes staring as if in shock. A short time later she was dead. "Lap of Love" was coming to put her to sleep Monday. I feel so bad. I loved her so much. I will never forgive myself. Do you think she suffered or did the coma protect her and prepare her for death? Thank you. Linda
I am so sorry about the loss of Honey, Linda. It is always devastating to lose a beloved pet. Without seeing her in person, I cannot say for certain, but if she was in a coma, then I would suspect...

My cat scratches a lot and these small black dots are on her back in different spots. What can I do for her and what are they? Can I send a picture? Thank you

Hello Dr. Looking for some clarity on human gabapentin in cats. My previous veterinarian told me (since I have a prescription myself) to just give my healthy 2 year old cat a 100mg of my gabapentin before future vet visits for her travel anxiety. He moved away and she’s due for an annual visit and needs a teeth cleaning. She’s 8.6lbs. If this is a safe dosage, can the powder within the capsule be mixed with food?
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.Yes, 100mg is a normal dosage for an average sized adult cat. You can open the capsule and mix the powder with a small amount of canned food. Only use enough...

Hi! I have a senior, indoor ragdoll who I noticed has these pink, somewhat inflamed spots on her ears this morning. We have two other cats and they sometimes can be aggressive when play fighting, which is why there is a small scratch on her ear as well. Also, she's been having mild diarrhea for the past 24 hrs, but that is normal for her when she has a hairball. I'm not sure if either of those pieces of information relate to her ear, or if it is something mutually exclusive. Thank you so much!
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This bump on the ear is very round and discrete which lends itself more to being an allergic reaction, a cyst, an abscess or some type of tumor. It does not look...

Hi, I'm adopting two 4-month-old kittens tomorrow who are currently living at a foster home. I just learned the foster mom has been feeding them *only* adult cat food for the last 8 weeks! -- both kibble and wet food (Purina kibble and fancy feast wet food). I'm worried about their nutrition and think I should transition them back to kitten food, shouldn't I? Please tell me exactly what to do and the best way to transition them. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
How lovely of you to take on these kittens! Yes, you are correct they should be on kitten food and should stay on kitten food until they are one year of age. Purina kibble is a great food, just get...

I have a 5 and a half day old kitten. I believe his right eye was forced open accidentally by his sister. None of the other kittens in the litter have their eyes open, nor are their eyes even starting to open. I covered the windows to keep the lighting in the room dim. Is there anything else I can do to help him and prevent (hopefully) damage to his eye? The eye is fully open. Thank-you, Caron
Hi Caron, thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question. At 5 and a half days of age, that is young for the eye to be open, and there is a concern that it won't be fully developed as you fear...

Hello. My door was open with a screen net and a raccoon came right up to the door making contact with my cat. Face to face. Is there a way for her to catch anything like that like rabies? Or does a cat have to get bitten for that? I immediately ran up and closed the door. The raccoon was coming to eat the bird seeds. Is there anything to worry about here?
Thanks for visiting Petcoach. Rabies is commonly spread through a bite wound. So there is very low risk of rabies transmission based on what you have described as making ocntact through a screen net....

My 16-year-old cat has stopped grooming herself and now has several small lumps of matted hair on her back, which I'm not able to brush out without seemingly hurting her. Should I get her shaved? Thank you!
Thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question about Lily. Poor girl! Yes I would get those matts shaved out, they will be painful to her. I'd also recommend having her seen by a vet. She's...

Hi, I've been giving my cat mirtazapine for the last 10 days. She has been eating ok but now she is constipated for the last 4 days. I have some cisapride here, and I was wondering if I can give her some of that, or switch from the mirataz to the cisapride at least until she has a bowel movement. By the way, both of these medications are transdermal, thank you!
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. There are no known contraindications with using mirtazapine and cisapride together but remember, all cats react differently to medications so if you notice any...

I have an elderly cat, 19-ish, tiny, 5-6 lbs. The flea collar we used to use stopped working. We got a Seresto, it nearly killed her, she stopped eating for a couple of days and got very lethargic. We removed it and she bounced back. I need a suggestion for flea control. We are afraid to use the kind you apply to the neck after Seresto… you can’t take the liquid back off like a collar.
lHello, thank you for using PetCoach. There are are oral flea pills available, however, you also cannot take back an oral pill once you give it......A 19 year old cat may have an underlying kidney or...
