So hemangiosarcoma is rare in small breeds? Even if they're spayed?
-
Sorry, I mis-spoke.....the rate of occurrence is low in small breed dogs as compared to large breed ones whether they are fixed or not. It can definitely occur in any breed but the ones I mentioned are certainly the more common. I think that in all of my years of practice, I have only diagnosed it twice in a small breed dog.....a dachshund and a beagle. Msterilization can increase the risk, but the benefits of it so outweigh the likelihood that a small dog will have this type of cancer, that it is still recommended to have them spayed.

Yes, hemangiosarcoma, compared to large dog breeds, is rare in small breeds. German Shepherd Dogs and Poodles are the breeds with the most incidence of hemangiosarcoma.

Whether an animal is spayed or neutered has no effect on the prevalence or rate of occurrence of hemangiosarcoma. This malignant cancer is definitely more common in larger breeds such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Dobermans, Labradors, Great Danes, Boxers, etc.- but it can occur in any breed. Smaller breed dogs are definitely less represented with this type of cancer.
