Are chia seeds good for dogs
-
Like many things having to do with supplements given to pets, there aren't a lot of good studies regarding safety and efficacy of feeding chia seeds to dogs. With chia seeds there is some concern that the hull might be difficult for dogs to digest, and some alternative vets recommend soaking the seeds prior to feeding. In addition, the omega-3 fats in chia seeds aren't easily converted to useful fatty acids by dogs (as is the case with any plant-based omega-3) so fish oil is likely a better source of omega-3's for them, if they tolerate it. Any time you supplement your dog's diet, you should consult with your vet regarding any specific medical conditions your dog has, such as pancreatitis, which might impact her ability to process extra dietary fat.

I would not feed the seeds, but there is no objection to letting your dog nibble on the chia grass, if he likes to.

Yes! The fatty acids in chia may promote a healthy coat and may be a good alternative source for dogs that are sensitive to fish and fish oil.
