My 13 year-old dog was diagnosed with glaucoma in one eye. Treatment was started and the optic nerve looks good. Possible that vision will return?

Please disregard that previous message. I was responding to a cataract question and not glaucoma,
Glaucoma will cause blindness in 40% or more of dogs within the first year, no matter what is done medically or surgically. And the optic nerve integrity can change periodically. I typically measure the intraocular pressures (IOP) at every visit and use this as my parameter that the glaucoma is improving.
However your pet does have a better chance of retaining vision longer with surgical intervention than just with medications. And to my understanding once vision is loss in the eye, it is unlikely to return. I would also suggest having your pet evaluated by an ophthalmologist for further evaluation, and also to evaluate the unaffected eye to determine if that one is at risk as well.

Typically glaucoma treated surgically has a very good prognosis for returning vision in the pet. However, if you are just treating with medications (i.e. topical eye drops), then there is no research that shows this will restore your pets vision, despite what the optic nerve looks like.
