What Should I Do With My Dog's Overgrown Nails?

The vet will use animal nail clippers, and trim each nail back until it's close to the quick without cutting. Sometimes the quick does get accidentally clipped, but your vet can use silver nitrate sticks to stop the bleeding.

If Benny has extremely long nails with long quicks, you have two options. First, you can trim the nails back a little at a time every day over several weeks - especially if you use a dremel tool or nail grinder, the quick will gradually recede with this method. Or, your vet can sedate Benny and trim all of the nails short while he is asleep. In this case, he/she would apply powder to stop the nails from bleeding and probably also send Benny home with antibiotics and pain medication since his paws may be sore for a day or two.
