How often should i give my dog bones to eat and which type would you suggest? And is it safe?

I completely agree with my colleagues and I would not give bones at all!
We routinely see so many dogs with problems due to to bone ingestion (any kind of bone and any kind of different problems) that I would suggest to give other kind of treats, such as baby carrots.

Bones carry a number of risks including food poisoning if fed raw, tooth fractures, splinters damaging the lining of the gut, larger pieces causing obstructions requiring surgical removal and constipation related to high levels of calcium being ingested. They do however provide an enjoyable treat and can contribute to dental hygeine. They should not be fed to any dogs with dietary sensitivities to meat or dogs with immune system problems, should not be left with your dog whilst unsupervised and if feeding them you should ensure all pieces are too big to be swallowed and removed out of reach as soon as they have been worn down. Never feed brittle bones such as chicken bones as these are more likely to cause complications.

I don't recommend giving bones to dogs because of the risk of intestinal obstruction or perforation if pieces are swallowed. I also see many dogs who fracture teeth from chewing on bones. Instead, I would suggest giving bully sticks, or even a large rawhide chew - these items are digestible and soften when chewed, so the risk of problems is much lower.
