My dog has been gagging and licking his lips for the past day and a half. He also hasn't been drinking water. What does this mean and what should I do?

Poor Bam Bam! Licking lips is a sign of nausea in dogs, and the gagging could be him trying to throw up. It's not good when dogs aren't drinking water, so I recommend taking him into your vet today for a health check. He may have severe GI illness, have eaten something rotten, or may have a foreign body. Your vet may want to give Bam Bam IV fluids for hydration since he hasn't been drinking. Your vet can also diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and how best to treat him.

These are likely signs of nausea. If he is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to manage him at home. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice in small portions every hour or two. If he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2-3 days. Afterwards, you can transition him gradually back to his normal food. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. If symptoms persist or worsen, take him to the vet for a physical exam, diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.
