Place an e-collar (cone) on h to prevent licking. He should be seen by your veterinarian. Antibiotic therapy may be indicated as well as a topical anti inflammatory and anti itch medication.

Hot spots are so itchy for dogs! That's why he won't leave it alone, it's really aggravating him. I recommend taking him into your vet to have them look at the hot spot. Oftentimes, they become infected from the constant itching, and he may need antibiotics for it. He also may need a steroids to help stop the itching, or a steroid cream to put on the hot spot. It's also good to have your vet check out the spot to determine in fact if it is a hot spot, and what is causing it. It's important to know the cause of the hot spot so it can be treated correctly. Hot spots can be caused by fleas, mites, skin infections, or allergies. Because hot spots are so uncomfortable for dogs, I recommend taking him into your vet today during their regular opening hours.

Unfortunately, if this is a hot spot there is nothing you can apply topically that will help much - hot spots normally need to be treated with oral antibiotics and oral or injectable steroids in order to heal. I would recommend having your dog examined by a vet as soon as you can, so that you can get appropriate prescription medications to treat him. In the meantime, you can clip the fur away from the affected area and clean it gently with anti-bacterial soap and warm water. I would also purchase an e-collar (plastic cone) for him to wear until you can get him in to see a vet, to prevent him from continuing to chew at the area and make things worse.
