There are no sedative medications safe to use without direct veterinary supervision, especially in an older patient. Please arrange an appointment with your vets office for sedation and full clipping

Unfortunately the only sleeping/sedative pills you can get have to come directly from your veterinarian. You can call your vet or schedule an appointment to get a prescription you can use at home during times like this where you need to calm Barnaby down.
An alternative is to purchase a cloth muzzle at your local pet store to help keep your pet from nipping, or send him to the groomers so they can attempt to de-matt him.
If he is too matted however, most groomers will refuse to do the service, and you will have to schedule Barnaby to get a sedated groom through the vet. This can be a bit pricey but it is often the only resolution for a severely matted pet. And care must be taken in the future to not allow his hair to get to the point of being too matted to manage, by doing daily or weekly brushings.
