How many puppies can a dog have? What is the average number of Pomeranian puppies per litter?
-
Small breed dogs will often have small litters. Pomeranians can usually have a litter of about 1-3 puppies, however if you have a pregnant bitch close to labor, an X-ray can be taken to determine the exact number of puppies she is expecting. This is very useful in alerting you to any puppies that may be retained while she is in labor.
Most litters will have all puppies surviving, however in some cases a "runt" or smaller puppy may be born. They can sometimes have a harder time suckling or growing and may need outside assistance to help them grow up healthy. These puppies will often return to a normal growth cycle if nothing else is wrong. If you are concerned about any puppies in a litter, then bringing them in for veterinary care is best.
Small breed dogs can be more prone to labor complications such as a stuck or retained puppy (called dystocia). If you think there may be a puppy stuck in the birth control, bringing mom and any already born puppies into the clinic for care is best. Your vet may be able to induce harder labor through medication, move the puppy manually or may recommend a C-section to remove any puppies that are stuck and stop the dystocia. Be sure to have any important numbers such as your local clinic and an emergency clinic on hand during labor in case of a dystocia.
