My 8 year old lab mix has been sick for about 2 months. We did some testing and found no parasites. Vet isn't sure what's wrong but he has diarrhea on and off and sometimes vomits. I want to try my own treatment - medicine for stomach acid and probiotic (meant for dogs) for everything else. He also won't drink water, but I think that's related to the illness. Right now, he gets a little rice with chicken broth and pedialyte. Is my idea for treatment an okay one to try?

Sorry to hear about Buddy's recent troubles. It certainly can be frustrating when a diagnosis isn't found quickly. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying things your way for a little while to see what happens. Chicken and rice with probiotics certainly isn't going to do any harm as long as Buddy doesn't have a food allergy to poultry. The use of drugs like pepsid or famotidine to decrease stomach acid can have beneficial effects as well. If the clinical signs Buddy is having continue despite in your treatment plan, I would definitely considering seeking the help of a vet to do some more diagnostics. There many different causes of chronic vomiting and diarrhea, some of which are more challenging than others to treat. One of the most challenging things to diagnose is irritable bowel syndrome. Buddy definitely has clinical signs consistent with this, but without significant testing there is no way to prove or disprove that this condition is the cause of his recent troubles. Anyway, I think going ahead with your plan should be OK. If you want any help or wanted to talk the tests over with me or another expert, feel free to request a consult and we can talk about the case in some more detail. Good luck!
