My cat leaked a substantial amount of urine, not drops, while he was laying on a cushion. He is an eight year old altered male who has never gone outside the box before. He seems fine other than that. Should I be on my way to the ER in case he has an obstruction?

It is highly unlikely that your cat has any sort of obstruction if he is leaking a substantial amount of urine. It is more likely that he has some sort of issue with incontinence. This could be a primary mechanical issue with the urinary tract or some sort of neurologic issue. They're also infectious diseases that can cause this type of clinical sign. I don't think this is an absolute emergency less you believe that Riku appears to be in some sort of pain or serious discomfort. Continue to monitor closely for any changes in Behavior or clinical signs and get to an emergency clinic should that be the case.

I'm sorry Riku is not feeling himself. If they are leaking urine that mean they are not fully obstructed or blocked- which is good news. But he should still be evaluated by a vet as soon as possible to work up the episode of leaking urine. Possible causes include urinary crystals or inflammation of the bladder wall, sometimes from stress. A veterinarian will help distinguish the cause and give him medication to feel much better. Signs that always should lead to an immediate trip to er are straining to urinate but not producing any urine, or extreme lethargy or vomiting along with any urinary sign. Hope riku is feeling better asap.
