What can cause a red rash around a 5 month pitbull puppy
-
This type of muzzle irritation can be caused by Chin Acne (irritation or an allergy to something in the environment) or it can be caused by puppy strangles (cause unknown). If Duke is also systemically ill (fever, decreased appetite, and lethargic), then I would suspect puppy strangles to be the cause. Both of these conditions require a vet visit to treat successfully. Here is a link that takes about puppy strangles more in detail if this is applicable to Duke. I hope he gets better soon. Take care. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A

Hi there and thanks for using PetCoach! This type of rash looks like a localized infection, most commonly due to bacteria or yeast. It could be secondary to allergies or a contact dermatitis which is sometimes seen in puppies who like to sniff and lick everything in sight! It is tough to treat these types of infections with topical medications because dogs typically lick any medications right off. Usually an oral medication is needed, so in this case I recommend taking him to a veterinarian for treatment.
