i took my dog to the vet today and they said his knee popped out and was popped back in and sent him home with tramadol. however, he is still having pain. How long will the pain last

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It sounds like tiny was diagnosed with medial luxating patella. Tramadol is a pain medication that sedated very well but in many dogs it does not adequately control pain. I would recommend something such as metacam or rimadyl to relieve the discomfort. Unfortunately until the knee is surgically repaired, the pain will potentially be constant and the knee will not stay in place without surgery. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns you may have. I am also available via consultation if needed.

Hello and welcome to PetCoach. A 'popped out knee' is likely a 'luxating patella'. This is something that will occur off and on, and likely has been occurring off and on with Tiny throughout his whole night. The tramadol will sedate Tiny a bit and will provide some pain relief. This can take time for the swelling and pain to subside, usually a couple days. You can discuss with your vet about getting surgery done on the knee to deepen the groove to prevent this from continuing to occur. Try resting Tiny for the next couple weeks, and also you can discuss with your vet about trying an NSAID for swelling. Do not give any human medications because they can cause severe kidney damage in dogs. Best of luck with Tiny.
