Hi. I have an African Dwarf Frog that has dropsy. He is quarantined away from the rest of my fish. I happen to have minocycline, which I’ve heard is safe to use for invertebrates), but i’m not sure what dosage to use?

It is used on a 5 day course of treatment. You can dissolve 20mg of minocycline per 10 gallons of water on the first day. On days 2 through 5, dissolve 10mg per 10 gallons. Hopefully it will help. Dropsy has a very poor prognosis though, especially if bloating or swelling is evident.

Hello! Lately I realized that the laoundry detergent I use is not so pet safe... I did wash Bazzel's blankets and beds with this "not safe" detergent, and nothing happeded so far.. I'm wondering, is there a necessity to use a pet safe detergent like "seventh generation"? Or is it ok to use baby's deterget, like the Persil one? Thanks. Lipaz
Hello Lipaz, thank you for using PetCoach.I definitely advocate for people using a more natural detergent not only for their pets but also for themselves/family. There are way too many chemicals in...

DVM Melanie, which panacur because the yellow box, that treats up to 10lbs, says it’s for dogs only, is it not safe to use for a 10 week old kitten?
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.Panacur granules are not labeled for use in cats in the United States. It would be impossible to get a small enough dose measured out for a 1.5 pound kitten,...

I cannot seem to find a tick prevention pill for my 9 month old puppy that is considered totally safe. We suspect that our 7 month old puppy died from nextguard over a year ago ( she had a sudden seizure then died). I have been investigating other options for our new puppy, but can’t find a completely safe one. In your opinion which flea and tick medication is the safest?
You have to understand that there is no such thing as a 100% completely safe medication. For dogs, for cats, for humans, for anybody. There’s always a chance that one certain individual is going...

Hello Dr. Looking for some clarity on human gabapentin in cats. My previous veterinarian told me (since I have a prescription myself) to just give my healthy 2 year old cat a 100mg of my gabapentin before future vet visits for her travel anxiety. He moved away and she’s due for an annual visit and needs a teeth cleaning. She’s 8.6lbs. If this is a safe dosage, can the powder within the capsule be mixed with food?
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.Yes, 100mg is a normal dosage for an average sized adult cat. You can open the capsule and mix the powder with a small amount of canned food. Only use enough...

Hi, my lab has a lot of lipomas which we have had tested and are not cancerous. He does have this new spot (which I know is not a lipoma) that started as more of a pink/red spot and then changed to pretty much the same color as his skin so I thought it was healing, but is now hard, its only maybe the size of a pencil eraser. Should I be worried?
Ouch! Any new change should always be checked out by your vet, especially if it's different from any other growths seen on the body. Skin tags and other growths can sometimes cause pockets of hair...

I’ve noticed the last month that my cat has what seems to be a little ring around his nipple and small area of irritation . He doesn’t seem to itch it, but I have noticed his neck becoming a favorite spot for me to itch for him. And a small bald spot on his neck. I’m not sure if any of that coincides but here is a picture of his nipple area.
This does look like irritation, possibly due to an allergy or something such as an external parasite (fleas, ticks, etc). I would make sure Skyler is up to date on any flea preventives and check him...

Hi, I am giving teef for life protektin 42+K to my cat. I used it for its tartar and gingivitis. I used it for 3 days. I felt my cat was a little lethargic after using it. When I asked a question here in petcoach, one of your vets told me they have never heard about the product. That really worries me...is it a genuine and safe product?..or some scam....should I stop giving it?
Hello, thank you again for using PetCoach.I answered your question yesterday. I researched the product before I answered you and I did not see any harmful ingredients. However, that does not mean no...

Hello! I wonder how can I wash my cat's catnip toys? Can I machine wash them woth a pet friendly detergent? Like "Seventh Generation"? I use it on her blankets.. but I wonder if I use it on her cantip toys. Some of them were exposed to mold, so I don't want to wash them with only water, and definately not throw away all of them... Thank you.
Thanks for visiting Petcoach! You can wash your pets toys in any detergent you want to. There are no stipulations to detergent. Especially if mold was on them. You definitely want to add some bleach...

Hi! I have a senior, indoor ragdoll who I noticed has these pink, somewhat inflamed spots on her ears this morning. We have two other cats and they sometimes can be aggressive when play fighting, which is why there is a small scratch on her ear as well. Also, she's been having mild diarrhea for the past 24 hrs, but that is normal for her when she has a hairball. I'm not sure if either of those pieces of information relate to her ear, or if it is something mutually exclusive. Thank you so much!
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This bump on the ear is very round and discrete which lends itself more to being an allergic reaction, a cyst, an abscess or some type of tumor. It does not look...

I have a 14 year old mini Aussie, who has this (see picture) he is not in pain, nor is distracted by this. It looks like insect bite, but don't know. We live in Delaware and he is exposed to deer. No other issues- good energy, appetite not sure what to do outside of vet (which is 30 days out)
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This lesion looks like bruising or an area of necrosis (dead tissue) but it it is hard to tell because I cannot enlarge the photo. A spider bite can do this but...

Hi! We’ve been adopted by the sweetest feral. He allows us to feed him, give him light cuddles and scritches. It’s late in the season but I’m going to try to use Nextstar topical flea and tick on him. My question is, can I use an OTC oral dewormer on him as well? Some of the warnings were a tad scary and I don’t want to get him sick. He’s the first outdoor cat we’ve had, so this is all new! He’s tolerated Capstar and the oral dewormer in the past. Frend and I thank you for your help.
Frend is so handsome, and he's so lucky that you have allowed yourselves to be adopted. Using a deworming treatment is an excellent idea, especially since he lives outdoors. I would recommend using...

Is it safe to give refrigerated amoxicillin to a 8 week old kitten (who was a stray) who has an upper respiratory infection? The kitten already has completed the 10 days of amoxicillin that the vet prescribed. However, he is still sneezing (no other symptoms lingering). Is it safe to give him the same recommended dose for another 3-4 days? (Pic is day 1 vs day 7)
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. The answer is, it depends. We need more information. When was the refrigerated amoxicillin reconstituted? If it was longer than 14 days ago then it is no longer...

I was recently at the vet and they gave me a prescription for both of my yorkies for bravecto, the one that is for dogs 4 pounds and up. But my one yorkie is a little only 3 pounds. The vet tech said that strength of bravecto is safe for dogs as small as 2 pounds, is there any truth to this? I can’t find anything saying that online and I am hesitant in giving this to my dog. It’s the chewable form.
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.I would NOT recommend using Bravecto off label like this for the 3 pound dog. It is labeled for 4.4 - 9.9 pounds. In a 4 pound dog, yes, I would use it but not in...
