Why is my dog coughing and gagging and acting like she wants to throw something up but does not and she has nothing stuck in her mouth ?

Poor girl. It sounds like he may have an upper respiratory infection (kennel cough) causing us coughing. It can appear like he is trying to clear his throat, but that is usually caused by mucous in the airway. A short course of antibiotics will likely clear things up. I hope that Raina feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

Good question. Some dogs will cough and gage from conditions such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, or inflammation of the windpipe or trachea. In more serious situations in older dogs, heart problems can cause similar signs. If the signs continue and/or gets worse, you should reach out to your local veterinarian for a complete exam including checking the throat and listening to the lungs and heart. Hopefully, the correct diagnosis will become evident and medication can be administered to help your dog recover in a few days to a week. One other thought, tracheal bronchitis or kennel cough can also cause similar signs and you might think back if your dog was exposed possibly through a neighbor dog or boarding kennel. Please fell free to set up a consultation if you have further questions. Thanks, Steve Popish, DVM
