My dog is a 10-year old shihtzu. Can you advise what's the growth there on her eye lid? It's been there for more than a year or two and it has grown in size from a small pea-sized lump. There are tiny blood vessels on the lump. No discharge from the lump. It doesn't seem to border her vision but she frequently rubs her eyes with her paws. She also has dark colored gunk in her eyes. I thought it could be due to hair getting into her eyes. Please advise what the lump is and what should I do.

Dr. Heidi DVM, CVA, CCRT, CVTP, CVSMT, CVCH Veterinarian, Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, Certified Canine Rehabilitation PractitionerAnytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we can't tell for sure what a mass is by just looking at it, but Sidney's mass may be a sebaceous growth. I am attaching a handout with more information about that below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1934 In order to determine what the growth is, your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. If Sidney appears to be bothered by the growth, they may recommend removing it for her comfort. Your vet can also evaluate if the growth is causing any problems with Sidney's eye or if something else is going on. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
