Hi there! Although there is an injection available, or was, there were some issues with the product's availability as there were just too many unanswered questions about side effects. Surgical sterilization is still widely used and recommended. 95-99% of dogs, will develop benign prostatic hypertrophy as a result of not being neutered. It can start as early as 1-2 years of age and most dogs will be affected by 7-9 years and older. Although the condition is benign in nature, it can cause obstruction of the colon and also the urethra, making it difficult to defecate or urinate. There are several more benefits, and they are outlined in the link I included below. In general, the surgical procedure itself is very non-invasive and fairly quick. It is one of the easiest of the routine procedures that veterinarians perform on a regular basis. It is the only way to avoid the health issues that they can develop otherwise. Here is the link I was talking about. Maybe you and your grandmother can read it together. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951454 I hope you find this answer helpful! Best of luck!
