Are Mexican fan or California fan palm tree seeds toxic to dogs? We are moving to a house with both in the backyard and their black/brown little seeds are in the grass.

The seeds of Washingtonia robusta (Mexican fan palm tree) is toxic to dogs. I could not find information to that effect on Washingtonia filifera California fan palm tree). So I suggest you remove all seeds from the ground (Vacuum them up, if possible!) and have them removed on the trees once they start setting seed.

My dogs E-Collar some how came off while I was outside mowing the grass. Earlier it had started to scab up. Now it’s seems exposed and possibly open. We are on day 6. I have now purchased onesies so that he is more comfortable and harder to get to his wound. Should I take Beau to the Vet?
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. If you can keep the E-collar or onesie on him to prevent him from licking it should heal up just fine. Leave the E-collar/onesie on for at least 7-10 days. You...

My dog was playing in a field and now her belly and back legs are covered in a red rash. She doesn’t seem to be bothered by it but it looks horrible. I don’t think it’s poison ivy because I’ve touched the area and I’ve had no reaction. I’ve been giving her Benadryl. Anything else I need to do?
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.Poor Snow! Her skin looks really reactive. I really think you should take Snow to your vet for an exam at your earliest convenience. She may need oral antibiotics...

Sassy snuck into our dogs crate with the dog. I didn't see her until I couldn't find her to feed her in her crate. The other dog take apoquel 3.4 mg which was in its food. I found her in the other dogs bowl but I have no idea if she actually got the apoquel or if the other one got it. Sassy is just shy of 9 months. This just happened and no vets within a 1 hour drive are open. I'm checking on the er vets but have to check in and wait for permission to go. Can she survive this until tomorrow?
Apoquel has a fairly wide margin of safety in dosing. At worst, you may see some minor GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea) and maybe a slight decrease in appetite. Further treatment likely will not be...

I have a 5 and a half day old kitten. I believe his right eye was forced open accidentally by his sister. None of the other kittens in the litter have their eyes open, nor are their eyes even starting to open. I covered the windows to keep the lighting in the room dim. Is there anything else I can do to help him and prevent (hopefully) damage to his eye? The eye is fully open. Thank-you, Caron
Hi Caron, thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question. At 5 and a half days of age, that is young for the eye to be open, and there is a concern that it won't be fully developed as you fear...

I was recently at the vet and they gave me a prescription for both of my yorkies for bravecto, the one that is for dogs 4 pounds and up. But my one yorkie is a little only 3 pounds. The vet tech said that strength of bravecto is safe for dogs as small as 2 pounds, is there any truth to this? I can’t find anything saying that online and I am hesitant in giving this to my dog. It’s the chewable form.
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.I would NOT recommend using Bravecto off label like this for the 3 pound dog. It is labeled for 4.4 - 9.9 pounds. In a 4 pound dog, yes, I would use it but not in...

Florence has been suffering with vulva dermatitis for about 6 months now. We have tried antibiotics for both bacterial vaginitis and uti and it did not help. We also are bathing with medicated shampoo every 2-3 weeks. Still no help. She is living in a cone because otherwise she bites at it until the vulva is bleeding. I need help. We have tried new food as well, still no improvement. We have tried environmental allergy medications and no relief with that either. Any suggestions?
Hello thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Florence is having this issue.Has a skin scraping/cytology been done in that area? Has a urinalysis/urine culture been done or was she just...

Ellis is a black lab, bred for guide dog service, but didn’t graduate. He is now 14. He’s a happy pup, but has been in decline. Just this year he decided he no longer wants to go for walks. He’s pretty lumpy. We now live in a house with mostly hard floors, but we do have rugs in places. He has increasingly had a hard time getting up off the floor and his paws tend to splay out. Just today he would get up and his back legs would tremble and he would try to wander around but hesitate...
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. There are MANY different things that can be done to help him get around better - namely medications that your vet can prescribe. I think it would be the least you...

I have a male neutered house cat that is about 5 years old. i found a kitten last week and brought him in. the older cat ate some of the kitten food (canned) and I made sure he no longer has access to it. Yesterday he didn't eat as usual and vomited twice. Today the same thing but he ate a little bit of his own food this afternoon and seems to be holding it in. his stools are runny. do you think it is from the kitten food? anything I should be doing?
Thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question about Buddy. How lovely of you to take in this stray kitten!! Yes I suspect it's the kitten food causing Buddy to have an upset stomach and...

Cat suddenly has diarrhea. Has had 4 loose stools today. 4th time saw little blood. Behavior, playfulness, and energy is otherwise normal. Eating and drinking more bc will eat/drink after each BM. Has always been good eater/drinker. He’s chatty as normal and still likes belly rubs. Changes: 2 wks ago given oral flea med &started adding new food to transition to but I add less than a handful and he mostly eats around it. I didn’t see him eat anything bad but know he eats grass sometimes in yard
Hello, thank you for using PetCoach.I suggest you have him dewormed and I would also start him on a probiotic (Fortiflora). If you do those two things and the diarrhea doesn't start to resolve in a...
