My dog has redness under skin. There is no hair loss but the skin is rough to the touch and has some hairs in knots due to him licking the area. There are no bumps or lumps, just redness and my dog did whine when I was putting pressure on it when cleaning it.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to PetCoach. If Lobo is licking at an area on his skin, it is likely itchy or irritated to him. Causes of itchy skin in dogs include allergies - such as to fleas, food and/or environmental allergens; external parasites such as mites (demodex) or lice; or a bacterial infection of the skin (bacterial pyoderma). When dogs consistently lick an area, they can cause what is known as a "hot spot", or a moist dermatitis. If not addressed, these can get infected with either a superficial or deep bacterial infection. I recommend having Lobo seen by a veterinarian at their next available appointment who can evaluate his skin, clip the fur in this area, perform a skin scrape test to look for infectious agents, and treat accordingly. In the meantime, I recommend putting an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) on Lobo if you have one at home to prevent him from continuously licking at the area and causing more trauma. I hope this is helpful!

Thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question about Lobo. He could be suffering from a skin infection that is caused by yeast, bacteria, or a fungus. It sounds like it's bothering him if he's whining when you put pressure on it. Based on this, I'd take him into a vet today or tomorrow. The vet can diagnose the cause of the redness, and can prescribe treatment for it. I hope this helps!
